Takeaways – Life. Lessons. Learned.

Mayor of Las Vegas Shelley Berkley

As the current Mayor of Las Vegas, Shelley Berkley stands as a true political trailblazer. She began her career in law and public service at a time when female representation was scarce.  By actively paving the way for future generations, she built a distinguished legacy that includes tenures in the Nevada Assembly and the Board of Regents, as well as service in Congress.  After further leading Touro University as CEO and Provost, she has returned to her roots, proudly serving as Mayor of her hometown.

The Vegas Detour and Middle-Class Grit

Originally born in New York, Shelley Berkley’s trajectory shifted forever during a cross-country move in the early sixties.  Though California was the intended destination, a chance encounter with a former neighbor on the Las Vegas Strip led her father to accept a position at the Sands Hotel—a job that would provide for his family and put his two girls through college. Berkley was the first in her family to attend college, eventually graduating from UNLV.

Driven by a desire to give back to the country that sheltered her immigrant grandparents, Shelley paid for her law degree partly by working summers as a Las Vegas cocktail waitress, displaying a grit that would define her future. Despite facing early professional rejections rooted in gender bias, she launched a formidable career that spanned decades of public service.

Unity in Action: Leading Las Vegas Forward

Now over a year into her mayoral term, Shelley Berkley focuses heavily on solving the city’s complex homelessness challenges.  She emphasizes addressing root causes like mental health and PTSD among veterans, aiming to get people off the streets permanently.  She proudly collaborates with neighboring jurisdictions and city council members to push the region forward.  Looking ahead, she confidently predicts that Las Vegas’ best years are still to come.
